I was in tears when we picked up Anja from the animal hospital on Wednesday. The vet did say that she was on the verge of being anemic but I did not expect to see her quite so lifeless lying in that cage. The vet explained how to administer the medication,
Epakitin and
Azodyl and mentioned that since she is anemic, she would be cold and we are supposed to keep her warm all the time. She asked us to bring Anja back on Monday for another blood test.
Anja was so weak, her breath was so shallow as I held her in my arms but she still responded to A and my voice and that was a good sign we thought. In fact upon reaching home, she sort of perked up a bit, and even managed a few times of where she actually held her head up and sat down watching everything that was going on around her.. watching away as Smokey, Nina, Minnie and Aggie visited her, smelled her and as they walked away, Anja's head would follow in that direction as well. She was weak, can't stand up, can't walk but she was alert and she was responsive.
She wasn't eating and drinking though. She lost her appetite and

though we were force-feeding her with food and drink, her little body couldn't stand it.. Her heart was overworked as it was beating fast. Her vet told us that as her kidney fails to perform and produce the red blood cell, the heart got to pump extra fast to make sure whatever blood there is in her small body gets circulated. She had become anemic and quicky went in and out of consciousness.
We continue to force-feed her and syringing her with water every 30minutes. Small quantity but continuous, just as her vet suggested. At 4am when I was feeding her, she looked like she was choking but thank god nothing happened.. At 7am when I fed her, though she looked like she was awake, she was actually unconscious .

Anja's condition deteriorated throughout the day. She drifted in and out of consciousness and got weaker and weaker even with continued force-feeding.. It was so heartbreaking to keep forcing her to eat as each gulp was like torture to her but we continued.
By dusk, she was going into spasm. I prayed. I prayed to God that if it is time for her to go.. please take her and end her suffering but if it's not her time yet, then please ease her suffering as well.
At 8.40pm, 3rd June 2009, Anja took her last three breath in my arms. She took one breath and exhale.. then another breath and exhale and with the third one, her frail body stopped moving. She was gone.
In a way, I was relieved that her suffering has ended. She was so tiny that it was simply heartbreaking to continue pushing medicine and food down her throat.
We would miss her for sure but we know that she is at a much happier place now and her suffering is gone..
Anja passed away from
